Addmitted we were powerless over food and that our lives had become unmanageable.

Leader's Share and Step Questions

Step One, Quarter 4, 2017

Leader: Robin

We admitted we were powerless over food — that our lives had become unmanageable.

“Compulsive eating is an illness that cannot be controlled by willpower.” This is a critical point. The illness metaphor helps us understand that it is not our fault. We can stop blaming ourselves for the failure of willpower.

When I came into program I had hit a bottom. I had lost my ability to lose weight. This is a devastating illness. It needs to get bad enough that we are willing to consider a completely different way of life.

We will always have these abnormal tendencies.” I am not offering a cure. I am not cured. In someways I'm a fraud. I am an a healthy body weight. I can fake normal. Consistently I hear things at meetings that remind me that I still belong. I am still crazy.

Self- will goes nowhere.

I want to stress that powerlessness is one of the most powerful, life changing ideas offered by 12 step programs. I have tackled many problems over the years by beginning with “I am powerless over ____ and my life is unmanageable.”

The AA Step 1 is even more direct. "No other kind of bankruptcy is like this one" "no such thing as the personal conquest of this compulsion" Why is that? Because the only cure requires a mental and spiritual revolution. It is not as simple as getting a food plan. A food plan is a tremendously useful tool. A food plan does not treat the mental obsession. A food plan does not help me when I am cranky, restless, and irritable.

Questions: 1. Write a history of your behavior with food. What have attempts have you made to control the food?
2. Read Step 1 in the OA 12 & 12. How has compulsive overeating harmed your life?
3. Read the Doctor's Opinion in the AA Big Book. How has the phenomena of craving affected your life?
4. Have you “hit bottom?”
5. Is life unmanageable?
