Greetings all from Jill, COE in recovery one day at a time.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do service in a new way (for me) as we begin the WTS Study for the 1st quarter of 2016.
It's rather exciting to begin a new year in a new way. I haven't forgotten the old way. New Year's resolutions always included a new diet and a gym membership. I'd vow to stick with it this time, never understanding, or even really knowing, that I had a disease and not just a weak character. I had no clue what "abstinence" meant. I did know that diets didn't work, but I thought that was through some fault of my own. I didn't understand powerlessness, compulsion, obsession or addiction.
Weight loss surgery in 2007 gave me a lot of physical recovery, but did not cure my disease. Losing 140 pounds felt awesome, but when the honeymoon period was over, I began to once again indulge my disorder, and suffered a 45 pound regain. By working the 12 Steps of OA, with a sponsor, one day at a time since joining this group in July of 2013, I re-lost the weight gain, manage to maintain my weight, and remain abstinent, although I have to admit imperfectly.
Because the 3rd Quarter of 2013 study was so significant to me, I want to revisit some of the basic things from that time that helped me get and stay abstinent. I will be reviewing the principles of the 12 steps as we work through the steps together. I love and appreciate this amazing way of life, and hope to share my journey going forward and to have you share yours with me and the group.
I strongly suggest that you work these steps with a sponsor. If you don't currently have one, please get one! TRG has a list of active and available sponsors who will work with you through this quarter, at least.
I have never led a group like this before, so I appreciate your patience and constructive advice. I intend to read everyone's shares. I may reply to some privately. Be sure to share your work with your sponsor and the loop. If you would like to talk to me personally, send me an e-mail with "WTS Contact Request" in the subject, and I promise to respond. My share and assignments will go out on Mondays, with a re-send of that week's assignment on Thursday, with the help of the awesome TRG team.
If you want a heads start, begin reading Step One in the OA 12 and 12, as well as the Doctor's Opinion in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Please introduce yourself to the loop this week, and share as little or as much as you would like about your story and what you hope to accomplish in the next 13 weeks as we Work The Steps together.
Thank you again for this opportunity to do service in the New Year!
Blessings in Recovery,
The Twelve Steps
