Step Five

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being
the exact nature of our wrongs.

Leader's Share and Step Questions

If we have swept the search light of Step Four back and forth over our careers, and it has revealed in stark relief those experiences wed rather not remember, if we have come to know how wrong thinking and action have hurt us and others, then the need to quit living by ourselves with those tormenting ghosts of yesterday gets more urgent than ever. We have to talk to somebody about them. (AABB, 12x12, pg.55).

Hello My Dear Friends in Recovery

With Step 5 we allow someone (other than the GOMU) to truly know us. With Step 5 we tell our story. "This is what happened, This is what I did, said, believed and ...This is why." By sharing our wrongs with a trusted confidant, guilt and shame start to melt away. Newcomers begin to realize their troubled past isnt as unique as once thought. We are all human with this disease of body, mind and spirit and we go tell how it manifested in our lives.

It's important to do this step with a trusted person, perhaps a sponsor or someone who has already taken this step. We uncover all those things that cause us to cringe and/or hide. Stuff we don't want to look at, but we can do so with someone who has walked the road before us and now with us; who help us clarify. It is not enough to sit by ourselves with all of this, we will whitewash it and/or put it back into hiding.

We let someone know "the exact nature of or wrongs"....what causes shame or guilt. Why we did what we did...we get down to basics. With each thing we tell, we let it go. That was then, this is now.

Keep it simple.

This is a wonder-full step and most folks feel great relief and a humble sense of peace when finished.

We have 3 prayers for the 5th step:

A Pre-Fifth Step Prayer:

God, please help me to complete my housecleaning by admitting to another human being the exact nature of my wrongs. Please remove any fears I have about this step and show me how completion of it will remove my egotism and fear. Help me to see how this step builds my character through humility, fearlessness and honesty. Direct me to the right person who will keep my confidence and fully understand and approve what I am driving at. Then help me to pocket my pride and go to it, illuminating every twist of character, every dark cranny of the past so I may complete this step and begin to feel near to you."

Fifth Step Prayer

Higher Power, Thank you for helping me complete my housecleaning. I can now look the world in the eye. I can be alone at perfect peace and ease. My fears have fallen from me. I have begun to feel your nearness. I have begun to have a spiritual experience. I feel I am on the Broad Highway, walking hand in hand with the Spirit of the Universe.

A Quiet Hour Prayer:

"God, Thank You for giving me the strength, faith and courage I needed to get through my 5th Step. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to know you better, by showing me what has been blocking me from you. Father, please show me if I have omitted anything and help me to honestly see if my stones are properly in place or if I have skimped in any area of this work."
