Leader's Share and Step Questions

Step Four. “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”

"Those of us who have completed step four have found that taking this searching and fearless moral inventory was one of the most loving things we ever did for ourselves. As we took an honest look at the past, at who we'd been and what we'd done, we began to understand ourselves better. That understanding was the beginning of emotional healing. Many of us lived our lives up to this point with a secret feeling of shame. We carried deep in our hearts the feeling that we were worthless and insignificant. Often this shame stemmed from unresolved guilt over mistakes we'd mm ever fully dealt with.
We had never faced our wrongs honestly and acknowledged them, so we were left feeling ashamed. Writing out step-four inventory enabled us to begin cleaning up the messes of the past so that we could start life over, afresh." (The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous," pg. 29)

Hello my dear friends in recovery,

We are going to take 2 weeks to complete the 4th step. That really is plenty of time. Let's get this done! One idea is to take the first week for "resentments and fears inventory" and next week, do the "sex and harms done" inventory. I looked back over my life in 10 year increments. It made it easier for me to do it that way. This is a thoughtful and honest look into our past, it is NOT meant for us to linger there...there is no need, we are just taking stock. "This is what happened that brought me here to this beautiful meaningful present moment in my life."

Everything you need for your 4th step is in this email. Be sure to read the email through before going to the website listed or the Big Book.

Remember that Step 4 is an inventory, not the story; we tell the story with step 5. Keep it simple.

I have thought carefully about how to keep this simple, but thorough. I found this website and it is perfect for what I am wanting to do. It is simple, clear and complete. It is how I completed my 4th step and it is the Big Book way.

www.barefootsworld.net/aa4thsteptips.html

Be sure to read the Big Book (Alcoholics Anonymous) pages 63 (last paragraph) to page 71 (end) before you start your 4th Step.

4th Step - pre-inventory prayer:

"God, please help me to honestly take stock. Help me to search out the flaws in my make-up which caused my failure. Help me to see where resentment has plagued me and resulted in spiritual malady, but more importantly help me to understand my part in these resentments. Help me to resolutely look for my own mistakes and to understand where I had been selfish, dishonest, self-seeking and frightened. Please help me to be searching and fearless in my endeavor to write my inventory." (p. 64:2, 64:3, 67:2)

Questions:

1. So, how is it going?

2. What have you learned about step 4.

3. What are you learning about yourself. Do you see your patterns?

4. Let us know when you have completed the first part (resentments and fears inventory) of the 4th step ....... or all of it if you will.

If you have any questions, as always, you can contact me via phone (number below) or email. I am very available to be there for you. If for some reason I do not answer the phone, please leave a message and I will definitely and without doubt get back to you.

All my love,

Step Four. “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”

"Next we launched out on a course of vigorous action, the first step of which is a profound housecleanng, which many of us had never attempted. Though our decision was a vital and crucial step, it could have very little permanent effect unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of the things in ourselves which ad been blocking us. Our liquor was but a symptom. So we had to get down to causes and conditions." (Alcoholics Anonymous, pg. 64).

Hello my dear friends in recovery,

Last week we wrote out our resentment and fears inventory, using the 4 columns as per the suggestions (instructions) found at the website I sent along: www.barefootsworld.net/aa4thsteptips.html

This week, we will write our "sex and harm to others" inventory. At the above website it is suggested that we not do this part of the 4th step via the columns, but rather answer the 9 questions found on pg. 69 of the BB.

We reviewed our own conduct over the past.

1. Where had we been selfish?
2. dishonest?
3. or inconsiderate?
4. Whom did we hurt?
5. Did we unjustifiably arouse jealousy?
6. suspicion?
7. or bitterness?
8. Where were we at fault?
9. what should we have done instead?

Keep it simple.

All of this is what was.....what is, is a different story and what will make it so very different is taking stock and clearing off the shelves of all the stuff that is out of date. We began clearing ourselves of outdated patterns and behaviors with our written inventory. By the time we are through (steps 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) our shelves (selves) will be pristine and available for our recovered selves....our new life walking in the sunlight of the spirit. As I finish my 4th step, I keep that image front and center.

Over to you:

1. Have you become aware of unwanted and unneeded (out-dated) patterns of thinking (old ideas) and behavior?

2. Are you ready to be free?

Congratulations on completing your 4th step. The rubber met the road and you were up to the challenge. Now set a date with your sponsor or trusted person to do your 5th step. Which will be next week.

If you have any questions, as always, you can contact me via phone (number below) or email. I am very available to be there for you. If for some reason I do not answer the phone, please leave a message and I will definitely and without doubt get back to you.

All my love,
