Step Two

Came to believe that a Power greater
than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Leader's Share and Step Questions

Hi everyone
My name is Shlomo and I am a compulsive overeater and leader of this workshop.

First let me give my answers to the assignments in my previous summing up share.
The new assignments are at the end of this share.

My answers to the previous assignments.
1. Answer again why we are powerless over food and over our spiritual malady

Please don't tell us what you do as a result of being powerless.
Do you remain powerless in recovery too?

ANSWER: The reason we are powerless is because we don't have conscious
contact with a Power greater than ourselves with regards to our disease.
When we regain this conscious contact by working all the 12 steps on a daily
basis we become powerful, we are recovered and we are not powerless.

3. Explain What sentences in the chapter WE AGNOSTICS present this program
as Spiritual
And not religious.

ANSWER: quotes: "We did not need to consider another's conception of God

Our own conception, however inadequate was sufficient to make the approach
and affect a contact with Him."
"When therefore we speak to you of God, we mean your own conception of God.
This applies too, to other spiritual expressions which you find in this book"

Also in the chapter BILL'S STORY his friend suggested "why don't you choose
your own conception of God"

Religion dictates to its followers which concept of God they have to follow
and believe in..
The 12 step program definitely does not. Therefore it is all inclusive.
Religious persons of any religion can choose the Power greater than
themselves as the God of their religion, if this is what works for them.
Non religious and religious persons too can choose any concept of a Power
greater than themselves that is suitable for them
Atheists who don't believe in the existence of a God can also choose any
Power greater than themselves that suits them.
One may even choose the group who meets for the purpose of recovery by
working the 12 steps and 12 traditions as a Power greater than himself

Since the 12 step program includes prayers as an integral part of the
Spiritual plan of action, the question may arise who do we pray to?
This question is usually asked by nonreligious people and by atheists
There are many different answers to this question.
Prayer may be a ritualistic way of expressing a wish to open myself up to
change,
It may be a way to communicate with my innermost self, or my subconscious
mind,
It may be a way to turn to the sane and better part of myself, the universe
my soul, a universal source of energy or life, etc...
Whatever concept you feel comfortable with, is sufficient to work the 12
step program and reach recovery..

The word God in the Big Book can have any interpretation we want that
represents to us a source of Power by which we can live as recovered persons

4. What is needed to begin the recovery program.

ANSWER: The answer is willingness. "as soon as we were able to lay aside
prejudice and express even a willingness to believe in a Power greater than
ourselves, we commenced to get results."
"We needed to ask ourselves but one short question? Do I now believe or am
I willing to believe, that there is a Power greater than myself?
As soon as a man can say that he does believe, or is willing to believe, we
emphatically assure him that he is on his way."

Also in the chapter BILL'S STORY "It was only a matter of being willing to
believe in a Power
Greater than myself. Nothing more was required of me to make a beginning."

5. What arguments if any convinced you to be willing to believe the
existence of a Power greater than yourself.

ANSWER. "Here are thousands of men and women , worldly indeed.
They flatly declare that since they have come to believe in a Power greater
than themselves, to take a certain attitude toward this Power,
And do certain simple things (the 12 steps), there has been a
revolutionary change in their way of living and thinking.
In the face of collapse and despair, in the face of the total failure of
their human resources, they found that a new power, peace, happiness, and
sense of direction flowed into them.
This happened soon after they wholeheartedly met a few simple requirements
(the 12 steps). ...
When many hundreds (today it is millions) of people are able to say that the
consciousness of the Presence of God is today the most important fact of
their lives, they present a powerful reason why one should have faith."

"When we saw others solve their problems by a simple reliance upon the
Spirit of the Universe, we have had to stop doubting the Power of God.
Our ideas did not work but the God idea did."

To me the word God in the Big Book is a generic term for my personal concept
of a Power greater than myself.
The arguments quoted here convinced me that if they can reach recovery by
willing to believe in a Power greater than themselves so can I, Since they
are just addicts like me.

6. Explain your understanding of the meaning of the proposition "either God
Is everything or else He is nothing.God either is, or He isn't. What was our

Choice to be?"

ANSWER: To me it means that I have to internalize and integrate my concept
of a Power greater than myself in all the aspects of my life and be in
active conscious contact with It , or remain in my active disease.

7. Where do we find our connection to a Power greater than ourselves
according to the Big Book?

ANSWER: " We found the Great Reality deep down within us.
In the last analysis it is only there that He may be found. It was so with
us."

So the connection to the source of a Power greater than myself can be found
deep down within me.

I will end this part with new assignments for you

MORE ASSIGNMENTS.
1. Read Bill's Story again. pay particular attention to the part where he
meets his friend who leads him through the steps.
Mark and copy the sentences that give you new information in that part.
Mark and copy the sentences that Tell you what actions he took on his path
to recovery.

2. Read step 2 in the AA 12&12.
mark and copy the sentences that give you new information.

3. Write down your personal concept of a Power greater than yourself.
What characterizes it, are you willing to believe in it, how do you think
you can achieve contact with it,
And how you think it can help you achieve recovery.

That is all for now
You are invited to send comments and questions to my private address and
your assignment answers to the loop.

Hi everyone
My name is Shlomo.
I am a compulsive overeater and leader of this workshop.
Before I continue with step two, I feel I have to return and explain again why we say we are powerless in step one.
Seems that a lot of compulsive eaters in OA and TRG and in this workshop don't seem know the answer.
They think they do but they don't.
Since they don't know the answer they think they follow the solution offered by the 12 steps but they don't.
And that is the major reason why there are so many relapses in OA and in TRG
too.

The result of being powerless over our disease is that the disease has complete power over us.
That means that I cannot control the amounts I eat, and when I do try to refrain from compulsive eating, my obsession drives me to eat compulsively again and I relapse time after time.
When I think that the result of my powerlessness is the reason I am powerless I will concentrate my recovery efforts on trying not to eat compulsively.
This is what is generally called abstinence in OA and other twelve step fellowships for compulsive eaters.

This does not work well since my compulsive eating is NOT the reason for my powerlessness.

There is a solution to my disease.
It is called a Power greater than myself.
But I am blocked from it by my spiritual disease, which consists of my negative emotions attitudes and actions.
As long as I am blocked from this solution I will remain powerless.

But when I remove the blocks by working all twelve steps and achieving conscious contact with this Power greater than myself, I stop being powerless on a daily basis.
I become filled with Power, My obsession is removed and I am not driven to begin eating compulsively.

So the reason I am powerless is not because I am a compulsive eater or an
alcoholic or a drug addict or because I have some other addictive disease.
The reason is that I don't have a Power greater than myself with regard to
my disease.

As long as I don't concentrate my recovery efforts on having conscious contact with this Power by working the steps,
I will remain powerless and helpless and not in recovery.
Abstinence as practiced by a lot of compulsive eaters is not recovery.
It is trying to refrain from compulsive eating by using my willpower.

Our powerlessness is not removed by our will power.
It is only removed by a Power greater than myself, and I know when it happens.
It happens when my obsession is removed or lessened to such a degree that it does not control me and I don't feel a need or will to eat compulsively.
Then I don't have to refrain by using my will.
I just don't want or need to do it.

So when you describe the effects of your disease as the reason for your
powerlessness you are putting the cart before the horses.
The effects of my disease are the results of my powerlessness and not the
reason for it.

The reason for my powerlessness over my food compulsion and over my
spiritual disease, is that I don't have conscious contact with a Power
greater than myself.
The solution offered by the steps is to work and develop this contact till
we become Powerful.
Then and only then can we stop slipping and relapsing.

The whole point of the program is to make us powerful by filling us with the
Power of a Power greater than ourselves.
When we recover we don't remain powerless.
We cannot have it both ways.
When I am powerless I don't have a Power greater than myself in my life with regard to my disease,
And I have to eat compulsively and relapse all the time.
But when I have a Power greater than myself in my life I am not powerless anymore.
Since I am filled with Power over my disease and I don't have to relapse on
a daily basis.

I repeated myself a lot here, but I think it is very important to understand why I am powerless, and how I stop being powerless and become Powerful.
Otherwise I will put the work on getting conscious contact with a Power greater than myself on hold or not really try very hard to do it.
And concentrate my efforts on white knuckle abstinence, (using my will
power to refrain from compulsive eating), and this doesn't work and is not
recovery.

Please reflect on the quotation from the Big Book, the Chapter WE AGNOSTICS, page 45
"Lack of power that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be A POWER GREATER THAN OURSELVES"

ASSIGNMENT:
1. Let us try again and for the last time to answer why we are powerless
over food and over our spiritual malady
And why we don't remain powerless when we recover.

You may not agree with my explanations and think otherwise.
In that case write your own explanations, and try to back them up by
quotes from the Big Book or the AA 12&12.

You are invited to ask questions and comments.

Have a nice day
Shlomo
