Step Eleven

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

From page 84-85 in the AABB: "And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone - even alcohol (food). For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor (food). If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes. That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality - safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition."

These promises from the pages of the AABB are enough for me to make me want to work Step 11 each and every day of my life. I do not have to believe what I say. I only have to say it every day and I will be in a fit spiritual condition and in a fit spiritual condition I will be abstinent. Food will not even tempt me. I will be able to attend Weddings, funerals, fiestas and buffets and have no worry about eating compulsively.

I will be able to spend time alone and not have to have food as my companion. As long as I am spiritually fit I will need no excess food to calm my nerves, lift my spirits, and lull me to sleep or inspire me to do my best.

Each and every day prayer and meditation will guide me in what I do. I will learn trust to do the next right thing. I will gain strength to follow the OA program to the best of my abilities. Clarity will come and I will know what to do even though I have not done it before.

If this sounds like fiction to you I suggest that you begin today to work Step 11. Prayer in the morning as your first conscious contact with God is suggested as a way to begin your day. The Serenity Prayer is always a good prayer. It is easily learned and covers a lot of ground. At bed time you can repeat the prayer. During the day it can be said as often as you want to or need to say it.

Meditation during the course of the day is suggested as a way of listening for the voice of your HP telling you what you need to hear. The words can come from others, could be heard in the sounds around you or come to you through the situations you bring about. Set a little time for you to be quiet and listen for the God of your understanding to speak directly to you. It may take time to learn to hear the truth. Practice listening for the voice that comes from your HP. Then grain trust in following what is said. Life is worth it.

Having come this far with the group I know the program is not a liar. The program is truthful in everything it teaches. Abstinence is promised if we are spiritually fit. Step 11 is the way to be Spiritually Fit. Practice, practice, practice is the way to work this step. Daily we keep in touch with HP and daily we are given the miracle of Abstinence.

Voices of Recovery pp. 344: "Upon awakening, I ask my Higher Power to divorce my thoughts from self-pity, dishonesty, and self-seeking. When I ask for help with my motives, I receive peaceful clarity in my thinking process.... Today, this healthy spiritual condition allows me to react sanely and normally to food."

Step Leader 4th Quarter

This step tells me exactly what to do to keep my recovery. Keep in a fit spiritual condition. It tells me prayer and meditation is a way to do this. It leaves it up to me just how to do this. Keep it simple.

Questions for you this week are:

1.. Do I believe this is the way to go to gain abstinence? Can abstinence be as simple as this? Do you feel you can begin to grow in spirituality so you can gain abstinence?

2.. If you have worked a long time to gain abstinence and never "got it" why will it work this time?

3.. If you are working Step 11 daily please share with the group your feelings if you find it working or if you find it not working.
I look forward to reading your answers this week. I am always looking for ways to strengthen my program. You have given me much to think about and many ways to make my program stronger.
