Step Four

Made a searching and fearless
moral inventory of ourselves.

Come one now. Do not let me here all alone. I know you have heard much about this step. Many people came this far only to stop because of fear: that four letter word that strikes us dead in our tracks. I am not going to give you a lecture. I am not going to make you read hundreds of words about why you should do this step. The reasons for doing this step have been written about so well in the AABB, pages 64 - 71 and the OA 12 & 12 and the AA 12&12. You can read those books if you want reasons why you should do this step. I am going to give you some low down on my Step 4 work.

My inventory consisted of almost 200 questions. I answered all those that pertained to me. It took me a while, about a month. Iím still here to tell you about. I did not meet with some freaky accident. I did not make the world mad at me. The GOMU did not strike me down. None of these things happened. I am alive here today to tell you about it.

What did happen is that I was able to work the next steps and I found my abstinence and I am in recovery today. That is what happened to me. Most of the people I meet in OA who are long time members who have lost much weight and kept it off are 4th step vets.

I have been in OA long enough to have heard almost every reason there is for not working the 4th step. One person told me she was looking for the right note book to use and of course that meant she had to find the right pen to go with it. I have heard people say, "I want to do it perfectly so I need to find the right time." Perfection is not the name of this game.

This step requires courage in great amounts. You are about to embark on an adventure into the past so you will be able to look the future square in the face without wincing. When the 4th step is completed a heavy weight will be lifted from your shoulders. You will have accomplished something only you can do. No one else will do as good a job on your inventory as you. It takes courage to face your past. It takes courage to look your self in the eye and write down what you find.

This is not a test. This is the real thing. Your HP is there right along with you, holding your hand, reminding you of the need to continue this fearless and searching inventory. Your sponsor is there to help and prod and keep you moving through the stuff that hit the fan. Take advantage of your sponsor. Ask your sponsor to keep urging you to stick to it.

Sponsors, I ask that you take this step to your sponsee. Keep plugging and nagging away until the work is complete. Remember you are there to help, answer questions, and make suggestions and to keep your sponsee moving along the road to happy destiny.

This is the time to ask your HP for help, hitch up your belt, blow on your hands, dig in your toes and get this job done. No excuses. No run arounds. Make the commitment to your sponsor, your HP and most importantly to yourself.

And keep coming back!! You are so worth it.

Every man has his own courage, but is betrayed because he seeks in himself the courage of other persons. Ralph Waldo Emerson. Page 24, For Today

Step Leader 4th Quarter

There are no questions this week. Before you jump for joy there is a plan to my madness. You can use this time to write your inventory. Take this week to begin writing your inventory. Share your inventory only with your sponsor or someone you chose. Do not, I repeat, do not send your inventory to this loop.

I hope I hear from all of you. Drop me line telling me you are working on your inventory. You can hit reply and just say, "Iím working on my inventory."

This is your inventory. Begin by asking yourself where you have been at fault.

If you have a prayer card with the words "Examination of Conscious" it can be used as a guide.

These are some questions from page 69 in the AABB.

Where had we been selfish, dishonest, or inconsiderate? Whom had we hurt? Did we unjustifiable arouse jealousy, suspicion or bitterness? Where we at were fault, what should we have done instead? We got this all this down on paper..

I say a prayer for all of you every day. This week my prayer will include courage to face your past and to come back next week.

Yours in ESH
