Step Twelve

Step 12 - "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to compulsive overeaters and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

Dear Friends,

With Step Twelve we come to the end of this quarter's WTS Step Study and to the beginning of a new way of life. Step 12 is the third part of the maintenance steps. Step 10 tells us that we continue to do what we did in the first 9 steps and Step 11 gives us the means to grow and strengthen our conscious contact with our Higher Power. Step 12 is about the daily living of the spiritual principles found in each of the steps, in ALL our affairs, each day, one day at a time. A plan for living and a plan for life.

We go about our days, living in: acceptance, honesty, faith, hope, courage, integrity, willingness, humility, self discipline, forgiveness, tolerance, love, perseverance, spiritual awareness and service, to the very best of our ability. I know my ability has grown this WTS Step 4th quarter thanks to all of you. We have quite a wonderful, practical and workable road map for a meaningful, purposeful life where we can be joyful and free regardless of the life's circumstances. The 12th Step talks about a "spiritual awakening" and service. The Spiritual Awakening comes as a result of working ALL of the steps. For me, it has been a spiritual awakening of the educational variety. I came into recovery full of dread, depression, fear etc. etc. and now I have been in recovery for 15 1/2 years and although I still experience some pain once in awhile, it has never been the same for me. I always have the spiritual principles to fall back on and of course the maintenance steps on a daily basis. I have not only learned to live life on life's terms but I can do so with joy (if I choose to) even during the rough times. My life is so different now.

I am immersed in a power greater than myself. I can easily identify when I am in self will rather than God's will because I now know when my COE ego takes over because I feel separate rather than in communion with my H.P. and all of you. I used to use food to get that feeling of fullness, but now I have the Steps, I have my H.P. and I have a way of being in the world that assures me of continuing progress and a deep sense of belonging and connectedness as I continue to unveil the true me and get closer and closer to my H.P.......That way is........Service.

Doing service to carry this message to others who still suffer is one of the most purposeful things in my life. Actually it is the most meaningful thing I do. I do it with all my heart. And as it is meant to be: each and every time I give, I get back 1000 fold. I began doing service early in my recovery and I am so grateful that I did. I have been given so much, and therefore, I do a lot of service. It is the backbone of my recovery. Most of my personal growth comes through service. Because in service, I get to practice the principles and I get to see my little ego rare it's ugly head with its fears and doubts. I get to walk through these things and laugh at myself because I have so many folks that care and are there for me. I am truly a part of something larger than myself when I am involved in service. As I learn more and more through working the maintenance steps on a daily basis, I put my ego aside (sometimes quickly ....sometimes slowly), and I get to know what it is like to walk in the will of God. It is truly heaven on earth.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to be of service. I am grateful for all I learned from your shares on the Steps. You are awesome!!

I wish you all the joy that is unaffected by outer circumstances......I wish you the bounty that comes with Working The Steps.

all my love,
Dreena

Step 12 Questions:

1) How does it feel to have worked all of the steps to the best of your ability? If you have not been able to complete all of the steps during this quarter, where are you in your Step work and will you continue on next quarter? What do you imagine it will be like to complete the steps?

2) Have you had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps? Please describe what that is like for you?

3) What service do you do for OA and/or The Recovery Group to give back what you have received? Do you get back more than you give?

4) Nothing is more important than my living in an attitude of gratitude. How about you? What things are you most grateful today.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you all.

All my love,
Dreena
