Step Nine ~ Introduction

"Made direct amends to such people wherever possible,
except when to do so would injure them or others."

In Step Eight, we looked at our behavior pattern and thought about our inventory and completed this Step.

"Make a list of all persons we had harmed
and become willing to make amends to them all."

Step Eight was not the Step for actually making our amends ... it's a list-making step. A Step of organization. A Step of preparation.

Audrey is again our Step Leader for Step Nine. Welcome to WTS ~ Working the Steps, Audrey. We look forward to this month under your guidance.

Step Nine ~ Part One

"Made direct amends to such people wherever possible,
except when to do so would injure them or others."

Good morning, my name is Audrey, a recovering COE and I am honored to be leading this Step Study on Step Nine this month. There are five weeks in this month and I will post these questions today and each Sunday I will post more questions. My prayer is that I can be of some service to you in working these Steps that have saved my life. I know some of you dread this but hang on. You only have recovery ahead of you so reach out for it and lets do this together. I am ready to go to any lengths. I hope you are.

76:3 in the Big Book of Alcohol Anonymous: Now we need more action, without which we find that "Faith without works is dead." Let's look at Steps Eight and Nine. We have a list of all persons we have harmed and to whom we are willing to make amends. We made it when we took inventory. We subjected ourselves to a drastic self appraisal. Now we go out to our fellows and repair the damage done in the past. We attempt to sweep away the debris which has accumulated out of our effort to live on self-will and run the show ourselves. If we haven't the will to do this, we ask until it comes. Remember it was agreed at the beginning we would go to any lengths for victory over alcohol (food).

Step Nine Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

The principle behind Step Nine is self-discipline.

This step has freed us from the shackles of our past mistakes in a miraculous way. Our lives are changed, our broken relationships mended, and the ill will which poisoned our hearts for years is washed away.

2. If we put off making our amends what will happen to us?

3. Why do we need to discuss the action we are about to take with a sponsor or other person who understands the 12 Step program?

4. Do we need to acknowledge the specific harm we've done to others?

This is week four, I know I am early with it but I wanted to may sure I got all the questions out this month. And you have honored me with answering these questions and sharing your recovery with me. I thank you for that. My prayer is that I can be of some service to you in working these Steps that have saved my life. I know some of you dread this but hang on. Page 69 in the Big Book Whatever our ideal turns out to be, we must be willing to grow toward it. We must be willing to make amends where we have done harm, provided that we do not bring about still more harm in so doing. In other words, we treat sex as we would any other problem. In meditation, we ask God what we should do about each specific matter. The right answer will come, if we want it.
